EDSA Makati Southbound LED on Loyola Memorial Chapels
MAKATI, Philippines - In the thick of the onslaught of COVID-19, Out-of-Home Media has really taken a hit. With less of the audience on the road, the message delivery on roadside billboards has been reduced.
While roadside billboards in general have seen a lot of vacancies, nothing hurts the media vendor more than operating an outdoor LED sign. Between a static billboard and and LED billboard, a static billboard can still deliver its message even without evening illumination. and since there are limits to our travel beyond 8pm, there really is no need for the night-time metal halide illumination.
In the case of the LED billboard though, it is a totally different scenario. If you don't operate the LED, thereby consuming electricity, there is really nothing to see. Thus comes the hard decision on pulling out the entire LED contraption. Needless to say, LED Billboards take a greater hit in the time of COVID-19.
OOH.PH has done the rounds and we've seen a number of LEDs totally pulled out physically. Others have just been turned off.
Tough times indeed for all the promise of message delivery via LEDs. Nevertheless, this is not to say that we are to junk any plans of LED advertising. Some panels are doing well. We think this is also a necessary pruning in terms of the visual clutter on the main thoroughfares.
Like all other industries affected by COVID-19, we hope that the end is near so people can go out and view our screens.
